"I wonder if I am just restricted to engines from the 94-98 series 900S or can I look for a "better" used engine."
Well, since you said earlier you are a poor college student, your options are limited. Best and cheapest option is to put back what was there to start with, presumably a 2.3 liter non-turbo motor. Upgrading to the turbo motor will cost you more for the motor, the new exhaust you will need, the different engine management system (and this assumes THAT is a plug & play option for the car), a new instrument cluster (though you could get by with a turbo gauge tacked to the top of the dash).
Whatever you do, DO NOT put a new motor in there without checking it over. Have the pan pulled, and any sludge build-up cleaned out. Same for the valve cover & head. Problem is, if it is already sludged up, it really needs a complete teardown & cleaning.
When you get the new motor in it, DON'T cheap out on the maintenance. Change the oil and filter frequently. 5000 miles is NOT too little if you want to prevent disasters like this in the future. And use at least a synthetic 'blend' if you can't afford the real synthetics, but again, the saying hold true "you can pay now, or pay later".
Just today I changed the valve cover on my 1986 900 Convertible. Some pics are here:

Scroll down to the pics of the head. That head was virtually new when I installed it on that block 4 years and 54,000 miles ago. It has seen ONLY Mobil 1 10W30. There is no sludge, no varnish, nothing but clean aluminum.
Good luck!
