lock when opening email. This little trick stops any outgoing signals back to the spammer but allows one to look at html images in the emails that one wants to. All one has to do is right click the icon in the system tray to switch on or off the internet lock. Everybody should be using a firewall anyway. This is just one more way to blind spammers to your existence.
Recently I have been using spamwasher, a freeware/donation ware program. Spamwasher allows one to look at email in text form while it still on the IP email server. The text look prevents any html or other scripts from executins. Spamwasher checks with Spamcop's and one other black list, and it also allows the user to add one own local blacklist, with wildcards. Finally, Spamwasher can automatically send a "bounce" message back stating that your email address does not exist. Most these latter do not strike home since most of the return addresses are forged; also, some IP's do not let unsigned emails leave their email server. All in all, a fun little program. N.b., this is not the mailwasher sold for money by the makers of that wonderful and free popup stoper, panicware. This free program can be found by linking to http://www.mailwasher.net/
Ditto what Scott says about avoiding MS email software and going with Eudora. Even then, previewing of messages should be turned off to avoid even Eudora running a script that gets past your antivirus and firewall.
