Everytime I saw my girlfriend's cat near the car, I picked the cat up and put it on the car and tried to make it stay. Of course cats never do what you want so it always struggled and jumped off. The cat associated the car with being forced to do something, so of course it avoided the car after a while.
One of those compressed air can sirens for the soccer games works well too.
