I've had really wonderful success with the Kodak line. First the DC240, then the DC280, and now the DX4900 4MP camera. All of last year's convention photos were taken with that. Very easy to use, very reliable. It uses rechargeable or regular double A's. Kodak also make a special battery for it that is in the shape of two double A's and those things last forever. I've literally been on the same battery for over 4 months. I think the DX4900 is down to $299 these days.
Besides that, I love the Carl Zeiss lens that Sony uses although I hate the memory stick proprietary (and way higher priced) memory sticks. I think if they had used compact flash, I probably would have gotten a Sony.
Then there's the Canon Powershot G3. I think that thing is fantastic all around, but about $100 over your limit.
