cable modem and wireless hub?

My wife wants to get a cable modem. I'm connected to work for 5-6hrs/day over the modem and people can't call us - I don't mind but she does. I can get cable service for ~$40/ month w/ free installation through the university - anyone know of better service in the minneapolis area? DSL sounds a little cheaper, but I've heard plenty of horror stories...
So If I hook up a cable modem, what's the appropriate adaptor to buy so that my G4 powerbook w/ airport extreme card (802.11g) can hear it? I could of course get a Apple Airport base station but the price scares me off ($200 compared to $100 for Linksys WRT54G)
What difference would I notice between a router transmitting over 802.11b and once over .11g? Would there be a difference in x11 applications run remotely from fast workstations?
I know nothing about this kind of networking - learn me good on this!
