for acerbic and pop culture commentary, I'd suggest The Russian Debutante's Handbook by Gary Schteyngart (sp?). I enjoyed it thoroughly, and more than one reviewer has made the comparison to one of my favorite books, A Confederacy of Dunces, by John Kennedy Toole.
Also, how about Chuck Palahniuk? He's the author of Fight Club. Some of his books (Fight Club, Choke) are well wrought, but you have to be in the mode for that brand of detached nihilism (I usually am). Others (his most recent - title escapes me) miss the mark.
If you're in the mood for solid free range irony, and can't stomach the pretension (and length!) of, say, Thomas Pynchon or DF Wallace - cross the pond into some quality Martin Amis. Money has to be one of my favorite books in the past ten years. If you can imagine what the literary bloodlines of movies like 'Lock Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels" are, they probably involve a lot of Amis.
