Prior to college, between 1988-1990, I was in the Army and spent one year driving a HMMWV (military version of Hummer H1). I did most of the maintenance on it and know for a fact that they have inboard discs as well. One of the reasons for the phenomenal ground clearance - in conjunction with the axle going into the top of the hub as opposed to the center (gears with the hub center the power).
