Civics and citizenship...

I remember when I was granted my US citizenship, I was kind of surprised at how basic the civics requirements were. But, then I realized that perhaps my perspective was atypical as I had gone through most of my schooling here, I had actually concentrated on law/governance quite a bit in my college days, and English is my first language.
This led me to appreciate those who undertake to learn a whole new liguistic, political and lifestyle system after having been accustomed to a different one. Moreover, as I'm a big believer in the American 'system' (as opposed to this country's policies, on which my views, like everyone else's, vary wildly depending on the topic), I was shocked at how many US natives were wholly ignorant of the country's short, but well documeted history, its fairly straightforward culture, and the bases of its institutions. Talk about taking things for granted!
This amusing mock news story from this week's Onion sums it up best:
Peruvian Shockingly Knowledgeable About U.S. History
GAINSVILLE, FL—During her two-week visit to the U.S., Peruvian visitor Alejandra Mañera demonstrated a "frightening" depth of knowledge about U.S. history, her American friend Briana Heckel reported Monday. "We were sitting around talking about how Bush has no idea how to rebuild Iraq, and Alejandra starts mentioning how at least Woodrow Wilson outlined his postwar plan with his '14 Points' speech," Heckel said. "Then she starts listing all the points, and I'm like, who's Woodrow Wilson?" Mañera further unnerved Heckel by speaking flawless English.
