First, a disclaimer - I wish I had rewatched Part I and Reloaded just before going to see Revolutions - I found myself trying a little too hard to recall several important details. I do think my enjoyment of Revolutions was hampered by the fallibility of my memory. I also think that from a story-telling standpoint, the links needed to be stronger.
Second, another disclaimer : WATCH THE MOVIE FIRST - SPOILER POTENTIAL BELOW
Third, I thought the pacing of the movie was freakishly uneven. It felt like 2+ hours of frenetic action occassionally interrupted by languid commentary. Not unlike reading a manifesto on a rollercoaster. And, from a movie buff's perspective, just as nauseating.
Fourth, I really thought that the metaphorical content got spread too thinly - the depth hinted at by the first two installments ended up being itself an illusion. Given the questions raised in Reloaded, the conflict resolution seemed a hastily concocted afterthought. Not quite an "it was all just a dream!" sequence, but not as far removed as I had hoped.
Fifth, I kept thinking of Superman II during the final Smith-Neo battle. That's never a good thing.
Sixth, Today, I have thought more often about Kill Bill, an avowedly superficial 'style' and 'hommage' movie that I saw two weeks ago, much than Revolutions, an allegedly meaningful 'sci-fi-philosophy' movie that I saw last night. This is because Kill Bill is excellent by its own standards while Revolutions is at best mediocre by Matrix standards.
More rambling subjectivity to follow!
