I'm as techno-dude as they come, and the camcorder is about the least used gadget in the household. It's an ancient Sony that has shot 2 hours of video per year in the last 10-11 years :-). In contrast, my Olympus digital camera is always within my reach, and my Olympus 35mm SLR not far away.

Having said that, I'd go for a Canon MiniDV with the firewire port. Makes PC work a no-brainer. In particular if you want to share with family as DVD's, but the infrastructure cost is high (need decent computer, 2+ghz or a Mac, firewire or capture port, dvd burner).
