I'm sure you already know this, but you have to sell yourself hard on the resume. Use an objective statement (I wasn't a big fan of this until I realized that if I didn't clearly state what I was looking for, I could end up in a job I didn't want), and make every point proactive. I've heard that resume readers spend only a few seconds on each resume, so make sure that it is well laid out, no typos, and concise. Some people swear by listing only experience relevant to the position, but I'm not convinced of this. As I see it, any experience (even retail) can be applicable to any job. Highlight teamwork as well.
I think with resumes, content is as important as visual appeal, at least in terms of getting you into the "must read thoroughly" pile. Once you get an interview, the resume probably won't count for too much.
