I have a Ph.D. in Genetics and do not regret my decision one bit. I'm four years out of my degree and work for a biotech where I make enough to support a wife and two little girls (not in a major industry town mind you). While the pay isn't outstanding, it's very good, and I'm young, and I plan to do this for a LONG time.

But this is secondary to knowing that, when I wake up every morning, I can look forward to a job and career I love. If you're choosing a Ph.D. track for any other reason, then you will meet with frustration.

Now, here's the perfect course for you. Get a Ph.D. in genetics and combine your IT skills with biology to break into bioinformatics. There is a HUGE demand for IT skills in this area. Modern experimental techniques are generating so much data that our ability to make sense of it has trailed, primarily from lack of qualified IT support. Knowing what questions to ask AND how to answer them in this context represents a tremendous advantage whether you're in academia or industry.

There are several NEW Ph.D. programs available across the country that specialize in bioinformatics if you want to take just that route. Google it. I would actually recommend against this as it may be redundant given your background in IT. Better to spend your time learning as much as possible on the biology side.

Email me directly if you want more info.
