Hey Nathan,
I've done a number of metal roofs on houses. Some copper, zinc, lead coated copper and just plain galvanized (my cabin). The downside is that any vaulted space or room in direct contact with the roof may be loud during rain storms (its a complaint I've gotten). Urethane or other high density insulations can minimize this but the structure still transmits sound. They are by far the longest lasting if installed properly - galv. and zinc can corrode quickly on the backside if not properly vented. Colored aluminum is an option as well, but I think these look too commercial. Metal sheds snow and water quickly so snow guards and durable, properly aligned gutters are a must.
There are a number of products out there that simply snap together so installation is somewhat straightforward. You still need a brake, shears and some other metalworking tools thought. Also, beware of local codes that may restrict this type of roof as well as how it may affect resale. Fussy Minnesotans don't like being blinded by their neighbors galvanized roof. Expect to pay anywhere from 2 to 10 times as much as asphalt, but plain corrogated galvanized is pretty reasonable.
