I still have my 88 SPG (which I will never sell!) but I needed a more logical commuter car. I picked up a 2k 9-5 Aero and it's the best car decision I've ever made. It's been an outstanding value so far and it's a ton of fun to drive. It also looks fantastic and is easily among the most comfortable cars I've ever driven/riden in. I will eventually make some mods, like the suspension mods, and probably PPC tuning to add to the fun factor, but it is plenty of fun for me as it is.
As far as what to look for, in your price range you can most likely get one that is still under warranty. Run a CARFAX report, and take any car you look at for an independent inspection at a local Saab shop. It could be the best $60 you ever spend! Just make sure they have Tech 2.
For the fun stuff, look for ventilated seats (if you like them), BBS wheels or custom wheels of some kind (I personally do not like the "hatchet" wheels), and oil change history.
Remember, not all lease owners take the best care of their cars. There are tons of Aeros coming off lease, and most leasees don't plan on keeping their leased cars.
Good luck,
Mike
