directly from GM's media site, including a breakdown of 9-3 vs. 9-5 sales.
Yes, January sales were down, but as mentioned previously in this thread and others, the decline should be taken with a few grains of salt.
Such as:
- The January '03 Sales were relatively high because of the pent-up demand for the then brand new 9-3SS.
- January '04 had unusually bad weather, in the Northeast in particular where Saab gets a large percentage of its sales.
- December '03 had lots of incentives as Saab was pushing to break the U.S. sales record (and did of course), so buyers that normally might have bought in January may have ended up rushing to buy in December to take advantage of good deals.
I don't mean to sound like I'm making excuses for Saab, just explaining why I don't think the January decrease in sales is anything to worry about, especially with the 9-2 coming out soon and the increasingly favorable ratings/reviews the 9-3 and 9-5 have been receiving in the past year or so. And, I would hazard to guess, once the weather begins to warm up for much of the country, the recently released new 9-3 convertible should help sales as well.
Also worthy of note in the link is that, for all of GM's brands, truck sales were up 13% while car sales were down 17%. Clearly trucks are even still substantially gaining in popularity, therefore it reiterates the point that whether or not you personally would buy a Saab SUV, it is a good, or even necessary, product offering for the Saab's future.
