Selling anything can be like not really working for some folks and impossible for others. If I had it to do all over again I'd focus my selling career on something with more reward for repeat business and referrals, financial stuff or real estate. Mortgage folks are making a killing right now.
Hey I just turned 50, been selling cars for 30 years, and I'm starting all over again. Didn't sell squat in February. Tough to go without a paycheck in February.
Dealers can be very progressive and offer a wonderful oppurtunity, or they can be very provincal, clique, buddy-buddy and tough to work with. Doesn't matter the brand, it's more a function of the "house" or management. Some are commission oriented, some are unit oriented. Some are "straight sell" some are "T.O." (turn over) houses and either method can be abused.
Some places will start you out with a gaurantee, $2-3k a month, but won't be happy keeping you around if you don't cover your gaurantee.
Hope you like nights and weekends for working, car sales is retail hours, or your local may have laws closing dealerships on weekends. If not be prepared to work some goofy hours. And because you're on commission, be prepared to put in lots of extra hours off shift to be a success.
