The oil filter assembly is basically an aluminum part that holds the oil filter and is bolted to the side of the engine block by two or three bolts. The mount to the block utilizes a gasket, but I found that the assembly came away easily with the gasket intact... it is a pretty strong gasket (not a flimsy paper one) and looks like it was made to withstand removal and reassembly.
There are no moving parts in the oil filter assembly, so nothing will fall out. It simply mounts to the hole in the side of the block. There is also very little leakage since there is no pressure in the oil system when the engine is not running.
So, you just unscrew the mounting bolts, and pull the assembly free. I didn't even remove the filter, just set the whole thing to the side.
