Personally, I would pay off any high interest credit cards, then do a small hedonistic endeavor, then save whatever's left over. The savings could be IRA (Roth or normal) or for the kid's or kids' college. 15k is nothing for college. Heck, a "nice" school can have tuition for one year more than 15k. Even with state schools, you'll be lucky to get two years for 15k.
