I thought Alcatraz would be very touristy, but it really was an incredible tour. The boat ride over is very nice as well. Scary place. I purchased a bread bowl of clam chowder for $4 for the ride over. Excellent.
Coit Tower is an old fire watch tower built on one of the higher hills. Great vantage point to see the whole city, the bay, and the Golden Gate. Better hope for a sunny day.
The Golden Gate Bridge is quite impressive, but I am a construction engineer and may be biased.
The Exploratoreum is also a great idea. It is a science museum geared toward kids. http://www.exploratorium.edu/
The Palace of Fine Arts is very near the Exploratoreum. Very cool architectural attraction. Is also the location where Sean Connery meets his daughter in "The Rock".
Enjoy!
