walking away from a ton of cash is considered heroic. For a lot of Americans, being super rich and famous is their American Dream. Seeing someone leave that behind to pick up a gun and go live in a desert for a year or more at a time is mind boggling to most, and worthy of some level of respect to a lot of people. Familes are somehow subrogated to individuals seeking financial success and fame. Nonetheless, I respect that the Tillmans had to work extremely hard to achieve their levels of sporting success, and I do respect that they gave up their privileged places in society to fight for our country.
We live in a culture that lauds and rewards athletes with millions of dollars for P-L-A-Y-ing a sport while enlisted persons, school teachers, fire fighters, police officers, social workers, (the list goes on and on) get the proverbial shaft in terms of financial compensation. This makes no sense, but it is not likely to change any time soon.
The Tillmans receive the praise they do because they are shining examples of patriotism, recognizable members of the army of one, and an inspiration to people on a general level. All enlisted persons deserve respect and honor for the sacrifices they make, but countries around the world recognize war heroes... try G. Washington, A. Jackson, U.S. Grant, T. Roosevelt, DD Eisenhower, and J. Kennedy to name a few.
