they don't call the northeast the "rust belt" for nothing. I've seen 3 year old cars that look like moth-eaten sweaters from the road salt.
Engine cooling systems are more durable than body metal; easier to properly maintain that than to constantly wash off salt after every drive in the slush. Plus if you put a slushy car in the garage, the melting of the snow and ice stuck up in your wheel wells is accelerated, thus accelerating the oxidation process.
