OT - Refinish/sand blast cast iron tub?

We have a home that is over 150 years old. I am starting to re-finish the bathroom. The existing tub is a very deep very wide white cast iron tub. My wife wants to replace the tub with one of those tub inserts, and i refuse to install a plastic insert into our antique tub. I know i have seen these old cast iron tubs refinished before on 'this old house'.
Was wondering if anyone has had this done to their tubs and is there a DIY kit or do i need to hire someone to come to the house and refinish?
Thanks
ps. We live in Southern Maine
