A separate large monitor is great. Really depends on what you use it for. If I was doing a lot of design I'd have a separate 20 or 23 Apple display. As it is, I find the Mac the 15" laptop works great and the screen is so sharp I don't really miss having a larger screen, and I'm on the machine all day every day. If you can switch to a Mac, there is a great 17" PowerBook that weighs about 7 pounds (I think). Might be worth a look.
Think about how you'll use the machine. If you won't need the big screen all the time (like for graphics, engineering designs, lots of apps at once, whatever) the smaller screen is probably fine, if you still have a big monitor to use on your desk.
Think it thru. Remember that the portability of a laptop is great but lugging too large a machine can get old fast.
Good luck!
Noel
