I've very successfully used wood splitting wedges (you know, steel wedges that are about 8 inches long and have about a 10 degree angle) as spacers for the control arms. You can get them at almost any home improvement, garden supply, or hardware store.
Bleeding the clutch is a two person operation. Open the nipple, person in car pushes in pedal, close the nipple, release pedal... repeat until no more bubbles. There are one-man pressurized kits available, but I've never used one so can't comment on their operation.
