I liked the Haleakala sunrise, but we stayed in Ka'anapali, a 2 hour drive away, and getting up at 2 a.m. to make it to the top by 5 a.m. was painful. And while the sunrise was very nice, what really got me was how crystal clear the night sky was . You saw tons of meteors and more stars than you will see anywhere else, ever.
"Maui Revealed" is the best tour guide book you can ever buy yourself for Maui. Get it. Now.
Road to Hana was nice but Hana isn't much of anything to see (other than a nice red sand beach.). Don't go too far off the main road -- we had rotten fruit thrown at us by locals when we took a side road to a picturesque little ocean overlook. Which sucks when you're in a convertible (which you MUST rent).
We stayed at the Sheraton Ka'anapali, right on "black rock". best beach in Ka'anapali. Lahaina is a quaint town with little or no beach.
