The article's just wrong. The 2005 9/3's all come with a cigarette lighter-type outlet in the center console, which you could use to power an iPod or other mp3 player; I think the 2004's do too, but I'm not sure. In addition, the 2005 Aero's and Arc's come with an AUX-in port in the center console, which just means you can connect your headphone output or your line output on your iPod or other mp3 player (or portable CD player or whatever) directly to the factory amp, by plugging into the center console (under the armrest). The factory head unit allows you to cycle through various sources (radio, in-dash CD player, CD changer, and Aux); if your iPod is connected through the Aux port, then you can choose to listen to your iPod instead of some other source. And, you can control the volume by using the volume knob on the head unit, or the volume buttons in the steering wheel. But you absolutely canNOT turn the iPod on and off, or choose songs, or scroll through songs, or anything else, from the car's controls. ALL you are doing is piping the iPod's output into the car's stereo.
The 2004 9/3's, and the 2005 Linear 9/3's have an empty space in the center console where the AUX port would have gone if you had bought an Aero or Arc. ALL that this kit is is a length of wire with an AUX port on one end, which fits into your center console, and a plug at the other end, which plugs into the back of the in-dash stereo...you run the wire through the tunnel past the handbrake, etc. So, basically, you're just "upgrading" your non-Arc / non-Aero / non-2005 9/3 to have the Aux port you would have gotten if you had bought the Arc or Aero in the first place.
