I've used fork-mount trays for the last 10 years. Sturdy & secure. If you decide to buy an older model, make sure your fork or disk brake caliper (if applicable) clears the cam lever & tray.
I trimmed back the tray on my older Thule racks to clear the Avid disk brake caliper, and I've had issues with fitting newer Manitou forks to the fork-mount head (not an issue with the newer Thule Velo-Vise trays).
I'd recommend a bike-bra (Performance/Nashbar/Colorado Cyclist, etc.) for longer road trips. It reduces the aerodynamics/fuel economy slighlty but more importantly it cuts down a bit on irritating high-pitch wind noise and impact-hardened bug guts. Twist the section between the handlebar and the saddle so it won't "parachute" at highway speeds.
Also, I'd recommend against mounting the trays backwards (rear-wheel facing forwards), as I've seen bikes flip over completely and smashing the rear window (ex: Volvo station wagon) if you forget to fasten the wheel strap.
