A few years ago I was on my Saturday morning ride and I was in the bike lane. Well, this elderly lady in a Ford Taurus passed me to turn into a parking lot. I don't think she knew I was there. I saw her pass me, brake, turn in and side swipe me. Luckily I reacted quick enough to turn in with her. I followed her til she parked. She got out of the car and walked away. Maybe she didn't see me? Luckily I only got a bruised ankle and the Taurus got a nice fender scrape across it and a dent from where I think I pushed off... Amazingly I stayed upright the whole time even though I was a little freaked out.

As a biker, you just have to assume people don't see you. You have to make an effort to make eye contact with drivers that are approaching you. Even though that biker may not technically be at fault. He certainly wasn't riding defensively. I think it's the same way with driving. Defensive driving is the way to go.
