a lot of others will begin to as gas prices climb. (although news yesterday said they may be stable for a while.).
A lot of people see the price and feel their thinner wallet and react. Sure, the difference is not necessarily all that much on a weekly basis, but everyone lives off of cash flow and that's tighter for some people than others. And a lot of people bought their SUVs when gas was $1 and change per gallon, so their operating cost just about doubled. As my neigbor put it (he has two Jeeps), "You feel the gas prices cause it's cash out of your hand for no extra value--gas is a commodity."
I don't see people downsizing a lot, but I think wagons are going to make a big comeback. Here in NH I'm seeing a LOT of new Suby Outback wagons and other small to mid-size ones, Audi, VW, Saab, plus things like the Pacifica. They give up some size over an SUV, but are cheaper to run. More important, they are PRECEIVED to be cheaper to run, and that will drive people to buy them.
