Saturn: "Moving upscale with models styled and engineered to European standards and slotted between Chevy and Buick." Sounds like GM is planning a little in-house competition for Saab (..."exclusive European styled and engineered" vehicles) at a lower price point. Wouldn't that ultimately hurt Saab sales? Doesn't Saab currently compete in the "near luxury" market, routinely going up against Audi, Acura, BMW, Infinity, Jaquar, M-B, Lexus, and Volvo? Or am I seriously out of the loop, here? All of the aforementioned import lines have their own "near luxury" models to hook customers and (hopefully) capture them for the long term. Does GM intend to market Saabs in the same Dealer showrooms with Caddy, which has its own "near luxury" model?
My $ .02: it seems like a good idea from GM's marketing standpoint to bookend and consolidate through focus, but how does this actually help Saab? If GM is successful in "upscaling" Saturn, how long before Saab (with lower sales figures across a broader lineup through more dealers than Hummer) become the next Oldsmobile?
OK, now, be gentle and educate me.
