My sister cut her hand bad once, and got an ambulance ride to the hospital. She made chicken-scratch for money at her old job, and couldn't afford the whole bill for the ride, which was like $500. She talked to the payments dept at the hospital about her situation and they cut the bill in half for her. So it's worth a shot. And like any other institution that collects bills, they will most certainly setup a payment plan if you want to go that route. Probably with interest added.

As a side note, you need better insurance. My ER visit about a year ago, an overnighter, cost upwards of $3000. I paid $25 dollars out of my pocket. I have unfortunately seen way too many doctors the last year, and I feel terrible for the uninsured out there. Healthcare is unreasonably expensive without good coverage.
