I own an NG900 with a stick, and a stage2 9-5 with an automatic (tested a bunch of them, including a stick Aero), drove both on a race track. The 2.0 does need a stick, but the more powerful 2.3, especially in the Aero or chipped version works surprisingly well with an automatic. There's plenty of low end torque, and the transmission is matched well to the engine. In the sport mode it feels like the car is pulling harder than it does with the stick due to a remapped throttle. And it does in fact take some skill to drive the automatic aggressively, so the stick die-hards will always feel left out at first. The automatic is also easier to drive smoothly if you're going fast, the stick requires some clutch abuse to achieve the same.
The bottom line is, don't listen to anyone ;). Test drive both extensively and buy the car you like better.
