Promised my wife when we bought it that I would not race the boat, at least for a few years. It is set up for family cruising on Lake Erie. We sail out of North Cape Yacht Club, south of Monroe MI. The Nationals were held there 10yrs ago or so. Great group of folks. Part of the reason I decided to buy the boat.
I got it as a 'family trainer'. My wife and now 9yr old enjoy sailing on the right days. Unfortunately there have not been a lot of those this year. Cold early, and hot lately. Throw in a CA trip, another to OR in a couple of weeks, and the Summer is quickly flying by.
I have raced a variety of MORC and PERF boats over the past 20yrs. Recently sailing an Abbott 33 (great boat), and Beneteau First 310. Slowing down some, and not campaigning as often as I did on Hull #1 of the Hobie 33 Holy Toledo. That was every weekend and Wednesday night, and the weekends often lasted 5 days, like when we would do the Chicago NOODs.
Also sailed a 505 sport boat, the ultimate rush sailing, for a while. THOSE GUYS are good! Tough competition, great people, reallllly fast boat. The Porche turbo of sailing.
The Scot is a great boat though. Much better than I thought when I bought it. I've taken a number of cruising reaches with sustained speeds of 10kts, and the boat is very matter of fact about it. Don't even feel like I'm planing, though I must be. Honestly seats 8, though if you have much air that many bodies would be a lot to deal with. Comfortably handles 6.
I could see that it would be a good racer, and am aware that the Class is active. I'd like to see a couple of race boats set up and racing. I know that my factory set up from 1974 is not competitive, but would like to see what it will do.
You sound like a Scot racer, know of anyone towing it a distance with a Saab? Also are you aware of Nationals at NCYC, and think they would like to come back some time? The South is way too hot for me this time of year. I'm also curious if the Association had a good time at NCYC.
