Knowing WHY a car was totalled is key Posted by Greg Abbott [Email] (#2746) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Greg Abbott) on Fri, 2 Sep 2005 07:57:55 In Reply to: How much damage does it take to "total" a car?, Jeff B, Fri, 2 Sep 2005 06:46:46 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I bought an '88 9000 T with a salvage title in 1993, and drove it for 11 years and put 130,000 miles on it. It had been in a front-end accident that was not that severe, in truth. Lots of metal had to be replaced, and the radiator, but the drivetrain was just fine. It had been bought by a mechanic after the accident and fixed privately. I had the opportunity to inspect the repair work, and I even called the previous owner about the accident -- he was astonished that it had been totalled, the accident was not severe enough to knock his briefcase from the passenger seat to the floor. I sold the car about a year ago, and it's still running around in southern Minnesota.
So it's quite possible to add up to 60-70 percent of the value of the car for repairs, without threatening the structural integrity of the car.
As you can see, the key to all this was knowing the history. I would never buy a car with a salvage title without knowing why it was totaled, and having the repair work identified and inspected.
It'll be interesting to see how the dealer responds to these sorts of questions -- that will tell you a lot about their level of good faith.
