That sounds alot like one I got a couple years ago.
It was two days before I was to start a bicycle trip up around Mt. St. Helen's and I rolled my ankle. Since I'd done this before, I assumed it was just a bad sprain and treated as such. Went ahead with the trip, altho my shoe was a bit snug from the swelling. Actually did the hike down to Spirit Lake too.
Two weeks later on returning to home, it was still bothering me so I went in for x-rays and was told that the muscle had pulled a piece of the bone off on the outside of the ankle. I was immediately placed in a wheel chair and told to wait while the cast people got ready. I wasn't having anything to do with a cast having just finished a week long bike trip, with some hiking without too much discomfort (not to mention the typical ordeal of air travel we went thru). Everyone seemed to get a bit tense when I insisted I wasn't going to be placed in a cast for 6 weeks but I prevailed.
Ended up going to a good sports medicine guy who agreed and gave me an orthotic and an Ace bandage. That was around 15 years ago and I have no lingering symptoms.
