Easy. Do it well? Not so easy Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Wed, 26 Oct 2005 08:39:51 In Reply to: How hard is it to play the violin?, McTeague, Tue, 25 Oct 2005 16:50:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I played the violin in my youth. I can tell you this-
There are no 'easy' musical instruments. The violin is harder than a piano, easier than an oboe or french horn. It ain't just putting your fingers in the right place and pulling a bow over the strings.
If you have some musical ability, and have played other instruments, you can probably learn to do a decent job in a few months, assuming you have some professional help and are dilligent. If this is the first instrument you've ever played, assume longer with more work.
To learn to play it well, that's a lifetime.
As to a $89 violin, all I can say is good luck. There is a good reason why a decent violin costs over $1K. Yes, you don't need a $5Million Strat. But a cheap violin will sound like, well, a cheap violin.
If you want to try to learn an instrument, and don't want to invest too much money at first, then yes, get a cheap one and give it a try. I really do recommend lessons - if this is your first instrument, DIY will likely be very frustrating, and you'll quit. And if you do get lessons, you may want to talk to teachers first; they may be able to help with a better violin for loan or rent. Lessons will cost much more than the $89 violin.
