CD-R is the media that you use to make your own CD. MP3 is the compressed file which can be burned on a CD-R and used in a car stereo that suports MP3s. Most all CD players will play a CD-R, only CD players that say MP3 will also play CD-R that have MP3 files on them. I love my CD-MP3 player in my car with XM radio.
