DVD is a whole different format Posted by Greg Abbott [Email] (#2746) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Greg Abbott) on Mon, 30 Jan 2006 18:36:07 In Reply to: Thanks - Bonus Question....., Mike Lynch [Profile/Gallery] , Mon, 30 Jan 2006 18:19:59 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
DVD's hold gigabytes of data. CD's hold "only" 640 MB (that is 0.64 GB).
It's a different technology and different format. It just happens to use the same size disc as a CD.
As the newer technology, DVD drives include the ability to read the older CD technology. But if you see a CD player which does not explicitly say that it can read DVD's, it does not.
As with CD's, DVD discs can exist in any number of formats. There are video DVD's (which are to video what audio CD's are to music), and data DVDs. There are also a small number of "Super Audio" DVD's, which as you might guess are audio DVD's -- but the music files are much larger and theoretically Super Audio DVD's are much higher fidelity than regular audio CDs.
Personally I think that in an automotive application, no normal human being should be able to tell the difference between a regular audio CD and a Super Audio DVD.
Some of the navigation programs in cars use data DVD's to load new or additional geographic data to the nav computer.
