It should handle both CD-R and CD-RW with aplomb.
The older flat-panel iMacs with the SuperDrive, required, IIRC DVD+R. However, at some point, beginning perhaps with the G5 iMac, the SuperDrive can handle both + and - DVD's.
You should be able to check this yourself. Click on "About this Mac" under the Apple Menu, the click on the "More Info" box in the resulting window. The System Profiler application should launch. Under "Contents" under the "Hardware" triangle, there's a category called "Disc Burning." Click on that, and in the large box a bunch of data about your SuperDrive should appear, includes which forms of DVD-R,+R, +RW, and -RW the drive supports.
This is the System Profiler app that comes with OS 10.4.4 - I not sure if this feature is included in earlier OS revisions.
