They are classy, knowledgeable guys and, from what I can tell, straight shooters who will not force unnecessary repairs on you. They are particularly attentive to the need for an owner of an older Saab to separate, in the interests of cost, the "critical" repair from the "nice to have but not going to be a problem in the short or medium term" repair.
I have also had good experiences with S&S, and the loaner car is a HUGE boon. They have disappointed on one or two occasions, but overall they have been very solid.
Auto Scandia in Herndon has been ok but not great -- they did provide me a good "second opinion" when the guys at S&S thought I needed a new transmission for my old 900, when in fact all that was the problem was that the linkage needed some lubrication. But then they were unable to properly fix the well-known pre 1988 "sticky caliper" problem effectively.
I have not had good experiences with Swedish Motor Cars in Falls Church, though. First, they botched a simple idle fix and then botched an inspection, forcing me to wait for 3 hours. Second, I don't know where they get their used cars but in the past I've looked at some of those cars and they have been in crummy shape, especially for the price they were asking and especially since they were "proudly" touting their rehab work on the cars.
One other place to look at is Scandinavian Imports in Rockville. I havent' used them in years but when I did they were a little pricey but fastidious in their work. Big thumbs up.
