E911 capability or not, there are valid business reasons why Verizon may not want you to use your Audiovox phone on their network - they are very picky about what they allow, and have very extensive tests that manufacturers must pass before they will grant approval (I have taken a product through this process). Aside from any technical incompatibilities, their customer service department does not want to have deal with you when you call up complaining about their service and are using a non-supported phone - their customer service people are challenged enough even with a supported phone, have a menu of excuses to give. Sorry, but they have the network, they can set the rules - if you don't like it, go elsewhere. And your Audiovox CDMA phone will not work on Cingular/AT&T's TDMA/GSM network, different technologies.
PS, I used to have an Audiovox 9100 phone from a different service provider - I don't know if Verizon ever sold it for use on their network. It was adequate but does not support all of the extra-cost features that they are trying to push - another "business reason" not to allow it.
I'd also advise you to get a Nokia or Kyocera "candybar" (non-flip) phone for practically free - less than a new battery for your old phone, which you probably need.
