On May 31st my wife and I picked up our new 9-3SC from our local Dealer (Suburban Saab in Ann Arbor). We moved the license plate from our old Astro van onto the 9-3 as part of the deal, and then sold the Astro during the first week of June to a fellow from Indiana.
In late July I received a letter from GMAC stating they had not yet received a copy of the vehicle title which showed then as first lien holder on our 9-3. They asked me to send them a copy of our title and provided a postage free envelope - nice touch. I was a little baffled because I realized while reading GMAC's letter that I didn't remember ever receiving an envelope from the Michigan Secretary of State, and I should have received two. One with the new registration transfering the old license plates to the 9-3, and the second with the vehicle title.
Last week my wife ran across the letter and asked me if I had ever done anything about it. I started digging thru our paperwork for the vehicle and soon discovered I did not have a title to the car I purchased 10 weeks ago! Nor did I have Proof of Registration for the car stating it was properly licensed to me!
I called the Dealer on Thursday twice, leaving messages each time, no return calls. I called twice again on Friday, no return calls. I called three times on Monday, the third call to the Saab Sales Manager. The Sales Manager returned my call but I had already left to drive to the Dealership and meet with "someone" face-to-face. I talked to the Office Manager in person, she was aware of the issue, was surprised no one had called me, and promised to follow thru on resolution.
Today is Wednesday, both the Sales Manager and Office Manager are diligently working to resolve the following ugly problem. Sometime in the spring of this year a customer leased a 9-7 from this same Dealership. The salesperson (or someone) mistyped the mirror tag number for the 9-7, transposing two digits, and created a lease agreement and title application with the VIN of the 9-3SC we would be buying a month or so later!
The mistake was spotted and corrected on the Lease Agreement, but never on the Title Application. The title for "my" car is now held by GMAC as proof of ownership on a 9-7 lease. The Mich Secr'ty of State refused to issue a title to the 9-3 to me, or register it to me, because it was already "owned" by GMAC! This is why I never received the documents from the State.
The Office Manager found an entire stack of problem forms and documents in the desk of a recently fired back room clerk while searching for what happened to my purchase. Mine is the messiest of the lot.
So far this issue has enveloped the previously mentioned managers of the Dealership, GMAC Legal, and GM Legal. Tomorrow a band of individuals will descend upon the Secretary of State Office in Lansing (Michigan's capital city) to transfer title of the 9-3 to me, establish title of the 9-7 (whose driver is blissfully unaware of this entire mess) to GMAC, and result in a proper Proof of Registration for me which the Dealership will personally deliver to my home (their idea, not mine). Furthermore, if they can not correct this tomorrow, the Sales Manager will deliver a new 9-3 loaner to my home which we can drive until this mess is straightened out (again, her decision and not my request or demand).
A horrible mess which should have never happened, but Suburban Saab in Ann Arbor is trying very hard to do the right thing by me and and my wife.
