I think the point of YouTube.com is to provide a platform for people to put their personal videos on there and to share content. Social sites draw an audience. When you have so many people coming together in one place and driving traffic to the site, there is a huge opportunity for money to be made. Why do you think Rupert Murdoch bought MySpace for $580 million? He simply added ADVERTISEMENTS to the site and has made his money back a few times over. Some blogging sites encourage you to reuse their information and to share it with others.
Pointcast was maybe a little ahead of it's time. But customers started to complain that the service was slow. It also was causing traffic jams on corporate networks because bandwidth was not big enough to carry all the information that users wanted. I think with todays technology and more people on high speed internet connections, that company would have survived today. They went public in the late 90's and then fizzled out.
Scary to think that about a year ago nobody even heard of YouTube. Word of mouth travels fast!
