I think it's a little much to say that they rebuffed him, but essentially yes, Peter showed up at the SOC with his million-mile SPG, and was hoping for Saab to give him a free car. I'm not sure he had any rational basis for that expectation, other than Volvo did something similiar for the guy with the 2.5-million-mile Volvo.
IMHO two things happened since the end of August which caused SaabUSA to change their mind: (1) the lawyers had to chew on this -- are we setting a precedent? does this mean everyone with a million mile Saab gets a free car? If we're going to give a car away, how many million mile Saabs are we talking about? And (2) Saab has gotten a lot of excellent publicity in the last 2-3 weeks connected with Peter's donation of the car to the museum. In other words, the value of the positive publicity was now clearly in excess of the cost of a new Saab.
I'm glad they did it. Although given my average annual pace of 15,000 miles, I'll never get to a million miles.
I'll bet a number of traveling salesmen start taking a hard look at Saab, now, though.
