Something I find interesting is the number of people I work with at my various clients (all Fortune 250 companies) who are sentenced to use PCs at work but either have Macs at home or who regularly comment--when I pull out my PowerBook--how much they wish they had a Mac. They hate the hassles that seem endemic to PCs and the need for tech support. And since almost everything in business seems to be done in MS Office, there is never a file issue, so Macs are just fine. And the new Intel Macs can run Windows, so you can run all the PC only programs if you need to.

You're talking about home use.... Our household is all Macs all the time--the current count is four--all but one are laptops (2 PowerBooks, 1 MacBook, 1 iMac). The laptops have all the power you need as long as you have a gig or so of RAM. We actually like having a PowerBook as the main family computer because of the portability. On a nice day my wife takes it out on the porch to work or do her email; my younger daughter takes it to her room to watch DVDs with her friends while something else is on the TV. Or she IMs on the porch or even in the yard. My older daughter uses her MacBook everywhere. Ditto for me on my PowerBook.

You will find working with photos and video very easy on a Mac. Stuff just works. It's logical and easy. And once your family adjusts to the interface and the Mac's way of thinking they'll never want to go back. Plus Macs come with a load of built in apps that work great and tech support is about as good as it gets. Be sure to get the AppleCare warranty. As the machines get more complex it's easier for stuff to go wrong and AppleCare *really* takes care of you. My daughter had a hard drive replaced in 3 days, including shipping, and her school is out in the sticks in Maine.

The Mac ads arent' wrong! Going to a Mac is definitely smart.
