Mac.
I've been running Macs since they were Apples. I also work with PCs every day, and consider myself a pretty sophisticated user (I've designed hardware to work with PCs and written code). The nice thing about the Mac is that it is just easier. Yes, I know how to make a PC work, but sometimes (most times!) I just want to do something.
Is a Mac good for video and pictures? Very. The software it comes with is designed for the home user in mind. As a point, my 9 year old nephew got an old video camera from a grandfather, and was making movies within a day or two, editing within a couple of weeks. Now, before you say that all kids these days are born working with computers, let me say that he has only been working with computers a few years, and second (and how do I say this politely?) he is severely learning disabled.
As to hardware costs, yes, some Mac parts are more expensive. But everybody is using the same hard drives and memory these days so that's equal. And although all computers break, so far none of my Mac have. And I have a Mac laptop from 1992 (!) that still works just fine. I can see worrying about that if you have a large number of computers to take care of, but if you've got just one, you aren't going to be fixing it all the time and a sample of one is never a good way to judge reliability. And at work we have Dell laptops, and I have to say I haven't been super happy with the reliability.
The only pitfalls of Macs is that you can't run all the PC software out there. Yes, there is Parallels and other ways to run Windows. But that seems like a heck of a lot of work to me. The idea is NOT to work hard. If I absolutely need to run Windows, you probably already have a Windows machine - just keep it. And while you can't get all the gee-whizzy video games for the Mac that are on the PC, so be it. Yes, you can get more software for the PC, but with the Mac ,you probably don't need it.
