Highgear in Millburn, Cyclecraft in Parsippany, Victory Bikes in Union, Diamond Cycle in Montclair are the local bike shops around here (other than some that sell Kent/Huffy type lower end bikes).
AT these shops, the lowest road bike is around $750 -- for a Trek Pilot 1. But what most of them have are slightly higher end Cannondale Synapse and similar -- that are around $1000 - $1500.
Used bikes seem pretty hit or miss. I've seen some nice vintage bikes -- but every one is in need of some work -- tires or wheels, cables, maybe seat, shifters or derailleurs, etc. Few in my size.
So the internet route is appealing. Thanks for the comments guys.
Pete
