As to finding the part, probably surprisingly easy. At a minimum, go to Sears.com, and follow the support/repair links. They have an online parts system which is simply amazing. Make sure you have the model and serial number of the unit (usually on a plate inside the door or on the back). And it doesn't have to be a Sears dryer.
Also check your phone book for local parts distributors - again, they don't have to be specific for your machine. Most washers & dryers are made by just a few companies. More so now than 20 years ago, but you'd be surprised. Chances are good you can pick it up, or at most wait a day for them to order the part.
Also check on-line. There are a lot of very good appliance repair sites with instructions. This is best for troubleshooting before buying parts. It might be a contactor, a bad connection, or a safety switch that got clogged with lint.
How easy is it to access? Fair question. Many newer machines are much easier to service than the old ones. Again, check the on-line resources, or go to a bookstore and look in the Repair section - you'll usually find a few soft-cover large format books on repair for your machine.
If you can fix it for $50 or $100, it's probably a good deal. The trouble with used equipment is you don't know its condition - just like a used car, you're trading known problems for unknown problems in fresh paint.
In most cases, there is no need for matching machines unless that bothers you. The EXCEPTION is in front loaders. Most front-loader washers leave clothes dryer than typical top loaders. They take that into account when they design the dryer. So I wouldn't get a dryer designed as a pair with a water-efficient front-loader, and use it with an older top-loader - the dryer will work harder, and the clothes won't come out as dry.
