About a year ago, I retired a Sony KV25XBR after almost 20 years of service. At $1000 or so in the late 80's, it was the very best TV you could get. Even today, though the modern pictures are better, nothing I've seen recently puts out the quality sound of that Sony.
I'd fixed it several times over the years, but on the last trip to the shop, there were high voltage problems and an impending picture tube failure. The shop recommended I give up on it.
I wasn't ready to spend the money to buy an HDTV set at that time, so I bought a nice 27 inch Sharp set I found on Craig's List for $50. I figure it will last a few years, until the price of the HDTV units drop further. I have DirecTV in every room, so it won't affect me when the over-the-air TV changes to all digital.
I put the 27 inch set in the bedroom. I use a 32 inch Sharp in the main TV-watching area.
I think the prices of the HDTV units are poised to drop a lot further, so it seemed like a good idea to defer the purchase.
