The toner specs for each machine are similar but different. Generic toner should be OK, especially for black. The color is where there is a lot more science involved, as the formulations for the CMY toners can vary widely by manufacturer. For typical home or business use this may not matter, but be aware that the different characteristics of the toners can affect print quality. There's a lot in the mix: how colors will layer, their translucency, electrical properties of the toner particles, size of toner particles, their fusing temperature (which affects adhesion to paper), etc, etc.

You may or may not notice a difference in quality and there is also the potential for Brand X toner having a negative affect on the drums or image transfer belt. That could take a while, and by then you might want to get a new printer anyway.

Toner ain't cheap (it's where the printer companies make their money) but I tend to buy the OEM stuff, despite the added cost. FWIW, most of the "new" cartridges you buy are actually recycled. The company usually puts in new plastic gears (known failure points) and a few other bits along with the new toner. The rollers are swapped as needed (every 3-4 recycles or longer). I have 3 ready to ship back (free) to Xerox sitting in my office.

As Bill notes, though, not all toner cartridges are "DIY refillable" due to chips or other barriers to this practice. Check before you buy!
